Gregory, 28, started the journey Sept. 1 of last year in his hometown of Bellingham, Wash. He has traveled 4,750 miles so far, and he's not planning to stop until he reaches Key West, where he'll jump into the ocean to celebrate.

He expects to reach Broward County sometime Wednesday, likely walking along A1A.

''I've had a lot of time to walk and think,'' he said. "It's made me realize I don't need much to be happy. It's memories and meeting people. It's tough to understand.'' 

He's hard to miss -- a 40-pound pack strapped to his back and two walking sticks, the left down to a nub, swinging back and forth as he goes. A sign fastened to his sturdy pack reads ``Coast to Coast Cancer Walk.''   BY JENNIFER LEBOVICH, Miami Herald
