Gregory & Teko Sponsor WTA's Hike-A-Thon

WTA's Hike-A-Thon

This August, each mile you hike could be helping out the very trails you love to explore! As a Hike-A-Thon participant, or by sponsoring a participating hiker, you can help WTA to keep our hiking trails in the very best shape possible.

WTA-Image.jpg

HOW WTA's HIKE-A-THON WORKS

Participants register for the event and set two goals - the miles they want to hike in one month and the of amount they want to raise for WTA.

With their fundraising goal in mind, participants start contacting their friends, family, colleagues, neighbors, hiking partners and anybody who owes you a favor. 25 cents a mile, $1 a mile...the pledges begin to roll in.

As they fundraise, Hike-A-Thon participants can work toward earning a few handy pieces of hiking gear. Check out the list of prizes: hike-a-thon awards

Starting August 1st, participants begin to track all the miles that they are hiking. Every mile on a named trail counts!

When the month is over and they have hiked all that they can hike, participants contact their sponsors to let them know their total miles hiked, collect any outstanding pledges and send it all in to WTA.

At WTA, all the mileage logs are inspected and everyone who contributed is thanked. We figure out who's come out on top in each of the award categories and then we throw a little party to celebrate!

REGISTRATION OPTIONS

Across the finish line and into third place - one week later

We’ve got a good idea what Team DART-nuun is doing right about now. Sleeping.

This accomplished crew of adventure racers crossed the line finish last night at 1 a.m. at 2008 Primal Quest, North America’s biggest adventure race, an impressive third-place finish. For that, the team, which is sponsored in the pack department by Gregory, wins $15,000, but probably more importantly, a serious sense of accomplishment.

For some perspective, that’s - as near as we can figure - 158 hours and 55 minutes after leaving the start line. With minimal sleeping. More than 100,000 vertical feet of elevation gain. And a mix of mountain biking, trekking, kayaking, riverboarding, and - above all - navigating a previously unfamiliar course.

Held in southern Montana close to the boundaries of Yellowstone National Park, the race is still going on. Only four teams out of 47 still in the race (there were 53 at the start) have crossed the finish line. The race official goes on until July 2, so any teams looking to finish the race - a goal in and of itself for many who enter - have to cross the line by Wednesday.

These folks can really look forward to relaxing on the Fourth …

Look for a little post-race perspective in a future post.

OIA Eco Working Group Makes Strides Toward Industry Index

OIA_logo.jpgEgan & Associates LLC is very proud to support the efforts of the Outdoor Industry Association's (OIA) Eco Working Group.  Currently, we're the only sales rep agency participating as a voting member of the group and our very own Jackton Downard is serving on the Executive Committee (way to go Jackton!).  Jackton was there for the recent meeting -- see the article below -- and would be happy to talk details with anyone interested in learning more.

OIA Eco Working Group
Makes Strides Toward Industry Index

At a three-day OIA Eco Working Group meeting in Boulder last week, more than 90 participants representing over 50 brands started working on the framework for a manufacturing index that will determine how the industry measures its environmental footprint.

The meeting marked the one-year anniversary for the working group. Over the past year, members donated countless hours to develop the group's mission and vision, benchmark other industries, research possible outcomes for the group and reach consensus to begin the process by developing an index.

During the meeting, attendees split into groups representing apparel, footwear and equipment and began discussing how design, materials, toxins, waste and packaging determine a company's or a product's impact. Members of the Leather Working Group also provided valuable benchmarks with a progress report on their efforts to develop tannery standards, and Alex Boian, OIA director of trade policy, provided an overview of the political environment and sustainability opportunities on the horizon at the government level.

Most of the hard work needed to create an index remains and the group will now narrow its focus in upcoming months to:

  • Distill the notes from the meeting and narrow the definition of the index's framework. A smaller taskforce consisting of working group members will develop strawman frameworks for the group's comments.
  • Hire a third-party convener before the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market. This organization will manage the multi-year process of designing the index.
  • Ensure that the process serves companies large and small, regardless of their resources.
  • Identify packaging as a potential "quick win" and fast track development of packaging standards.

The next Eco Working Group meeting will be August 10, 2008, from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the Marriott Hotel, Salt Lake City.

The group's efforts are entirely voluntary, and individuals interesting in reviewing the group's work or participating are invited to visit the Eco group website.

At the beginning of the meeting, each attendee was tasked to have a take-away that they could provide to the first individual that they met on their way back home. "Our future just got a little brighter," summed up Greg Scott, of Mountain Equipment Co-op.

DART-nuun and DART-nuun/NW Kayaks have won Baja Travesia 2008

DART-nuun and DART-nuun/NW Kayaks have won Baja Travesia 2008.

Day 4, 9:30 am At 9:00 this morning, after 70 hours of non-stop racing, DART-nuun’s Cyril, Jen and Rinn, and DART-nuun/NW Kayak’s Glenn, Mari and Sean crossed the finish line together in Ensenada. These guys have just put out the most superb performance here. Both teams have made navigational mistakes which have cost them hours on the course – but they don’t stop and fight about it, they just deal with where they are now, how to move forward, and then go – truly cool, truly professional. It’s just been amazing to watch them in action. Their lead on the rest of the pack is nothing short of incredible. As they were approaching the Finish, Yoga Slackers set out from TA7, to start the last big canyon trek. At least they are doing it by day, so hopefully will make better time on it than the DART teams did. ExtremeSports.dk and then Dancing Pandas are about an hour behind them, so the fight for third and fourth place is still very real. Mikael, Helena and Rick have really been working their way forward here – can they keep it up and catch the Yoga Slackers? In any case, sounds like there will be no more teams across the finish line here before dark. I’ll head up to the hot springs shortly, in hopes of catching teams as they move through and also of taking a sorely needed relaxing soak there...

Matt Gregory, Nearing End of 5000 Mile Trek for Cancer

548-WalkStory_embedded_prod_affiliate_56.jpgGregory, 28, started the journey Sept. 1 of last year in his hometown of Bellingham, Wash. He has traveled 4,750 miles so far, and he's not planning to stop until he reaches Key West, where he'll jump into the ocean to celebrate.

He expects to reach Broward County sometime Wednesday, likely walking along A1A.

''I've had a lot of time to walk and think,'' he said. "It's made me realize I don't need much to be happy. It's memories and meeting people. It's tough to understand.''

He's hard to miss -- a 40-pound pack strapped to his back and two walking sticks, the left down to a nub, swinging back and forth as he goes. A sign fastened to his sturdy pack reads ``Coast to Coast Cancer Walk.''   BY JENNIFER LEBOVICH, Miami Herald
